2019 Notes From Artists Dennis Eavenson And Sharon Eavenson On The Card Suit Collection 2

The essence and mystery of a symbol is deeply rooted in our inner being. Starting with early childhood and developing from
abstract and concrete experience, humans build on their understanding of symbols as vital visual tools for communicating
both ideas and feelings. Exploring the emergence and usage of symbols for communication is the primary concern of these
artworks. Theses compositions focus directly on the iconic nature of recognizable shapes at their most basic level. This
natural formulation of iconic symbols provides the platform for discussing abstract thought.

Shapes can appear primal in their essence. We initially ask the viewer to engage in an emotional response to our usage of
color, texture, line, space and shape. Those expressive forces direct compositional elements with particular visual cues that
lead the viewer to further consider the realm of abstract thought. We see this as the moment where symbolism occurs and
ones own predetermined ideas and concepts about the world they understand begin to emerge.

With symbolism our purpose is to engage further contemplation concerning abstract thought process as related to physical
experiences and retained knowledge. Using visual cues we ask the viewer to consider ideas about the nature of the physical
universe. Theses prompts include: maze like grids, light rays, atomic elements and geometric references. The expressive
forces of brushwork and color to prompt basic emotional response and combines with symbol usage for opening a dialogue
on ideas about math and science.
