2021 Notes From Artists Dennis Eavenson and Sharon Eavenson On The Face Card Mixed Media Paintings

Humans have many methods for hiding visible reactions during difficult social or political situations. We set the stage with
clothing to signify an aggressive or non-aggressive position. Different groups dress with their own norms and may wear
hats, logos, tattoos, tartans, brand names and other such visual devices for ideology, position and rank. Corporate executives
wear suits and ties that signify status and importance while kings or princes wear crowns and robes. Military groups wear
insignias and uniforms with warriors wearing armour and masks. Football players utilize numbered jerseys and helmets to
assist with identity and maneuvers. In many card games characters are standardized and suit ranks established with spades
being high, followed by diamonds, hearts and finally clubs as the low suit. This defines the game and helps to establish fair
rules of engagement between player opponents.

This series contains painterly flights of expression and delve into inner psychological and personality aspects for these
characters. Breaking away from the visual standardization seen in playing card design, these pieces become unique
portraits of individuals. Our expressive mark making defines each character's feelings and emotions. Highly charged and
energized surfaces on some juxtapose with the calm reserve of others. Some of the personality grounds exhibit chaos while
others feel restrained. They are as individual as humans displaying distinct personalities. We are reflecting on personalities
we have encountered and also expressing aspects of ourselves. With this considered, these works are primarily portraits.

Our most recent artworks finished in 2021 are reactions to current social and political issues. Thumbs Up King Heart relates
to the turbulent Presidential campaign and our relief to see democracy prevail. Our Winter King Diamond painting reflects the
emotional reaction to the human battle with Covid-19 and our discontent with the devasting impact this pandemic has had
across the globe.
