2019 Notes From Artists Dennis Eavenson And Sharon Eavenson On The Freesia Photographs

Flowers offer a wonderful opportunity to the artist to study the beauty of the natural world. Each type of flower speaks to us
visually with innate colors, shapes and foliage. In these works we flattened the space intentionally and we kept the foliage
interwoven with the flowers to sets the stage for abstracting the forms and space. This is less of a botanical approach and
more about our ability to see the abstractness of the Freesia plants. By using a heightened lighting in the background we
focused on the interplay of negative and positive space which created a visual flow of dark colors and light ground. The white
pops forward to be viewed as a fundamental shape that defines the composition. The audience is prompted to consider the
abstract characteristics of flower, foliage and background spaces with a modernist point of view.
