2019 Notes From Dennis Eavenson On The Exploded Cube Installation
Two Week Conceptual Installation At The Atlanta College Of Art Library During Fall Semester 1971

The intent of this conceptual project was to engage the viewer in a visual dialog about urban life and all the varied visual
nuances confronting city dwellers. Using slide images projected through hanging frames that were spaced apart but close
enough to reference the cube form. We further commented on aspects of compartmentalization for both inner mental and
outer physical realities. Our images displayed captured both natural and man-made industrial ocuurances to produce a
rhythm inherent to urban existence.

Moving through a city provides a huge range of sensory data that generates strong emotional responses. Natural patterns like
tree leaves evoke a very different feeling when contrasted with a flatbed freight car loaded with pipes. Other images probed
the oddities of illusionistic space versus literal space to prompt the audiences emotional reactions. Finally, this work opens a
dialogue to discuss the artificialities of city life.
