2025 Artist Notes On Reality Queries / Ephphatha Artworks
The Aramaic word Ephphatha is used in the title of these artworks. It means "be opened." Biblically it refers to to healing and
specifically the miracle performed by Jesus in Mark 7:32-37, where he heals a deaf man by opening his ears. Both listening
and openess are essential to spiritiual growth.
"Ephphatha Spinning Top"
This acrylic painting contains a specific selected object, a "Foreverspin," set against a symbolic ground to explore distinct
concepts concerning humanity's direction. Theological, scientific, technological, social and cultural ideas are addressed by
the relationship between object and the painterly symbolic environment. Gold is forged in the heart of stars and blue is often
a rare pigment in religious art and used to signify heaven and a higher consciousness. This painting suggests perfection
and the abstract ground is meant to reiterate motion in the cosmic forces. The dominant top in front of the ground suggests
man's pursuit to strive for perfection, both technologically and spiritually. The arrow quills seen in the background pointing
down refer to the passage of time and and the top frozen in a moment of space time signifies movement toward singularity.
"Ephphatha Rocket Man"
A space rocket toy, flying across an amorphous abstract ground symbolizing gas like nebulas might exist in many corners of
many universes. I am playing with ideas about fantasy and cultural toys and their ability to spur the direction of technological
advances by mankind. The name of the ship was conceived; as well as the number, to communicate spiritual insights from
theological viewpoints. Matter born and dispersed via stars makes us star children. Exploration and pushing the boundaries
of our earth bound world is a nod to our perpetual curiosity and our fascination with travel as a means of discovering who we
are, where we come and where we are going in this constantly changing world.
"Ephphatha Anvil Clown"
My ceramic clown figurine staged atop an anvil decorated with the faces of Greek muses, Melpomene and Thalia, signifies
man's entry on the stage of life. The anvil pays homage to the ancient Greek god, Hephaestus, who provided man with forging
knowledge and tools. The dramatic masks are signifiers of man's dualistic nature and existence. Arrows refer to time; as well
as, technological achievements that spur mankind's multitudinous directions on the journey of existence.
